Portfolio mandate and allocation assignment

Compare two user-defined virtual allocations under the same fictional mandate.

Fictional teaching exercise. Use virtual funds; values and settings are illustrative rather than recommended investments.

Student task

  1. State cash/liquidity needs, asset limits and the observation period.
  2. Define two allocations whose weights sum to 100%.
  3. Observe the same period and record cash, positions and flows separately.
  4. Explain how each allocation fits the mandate rather than choosing solely by return.

Worked illustration

For fictional assets A and B, compare 60/40 with 80/20. If A rises 2% and B falls 1%, the weight-only illustrations are 0.6×2% + 0.4×(−1%) = 0.8%, and 1.4% for 80/20, before fees/flows. This arithmetic is not a historical backtest or an optimal allocation.
